Customs in England

In England, when a man meets another man, they shake hands and usually throw in a "How do you do?" Handshakes are usually on the lighter side and don't linger that much. When a woman meets another woman, they generally shake hands. When both genders meet they use a regular handshake. Women tend to extend their hand first.

In England being polite is highly valued. Expect a lot of "please" and "thank you" and "sorry".

Personal space and touching: The English tend to keep about 2-3 feet between them while speaking and touching is usually kept to a minimum. Eye contact is usually maintained during conversations, but they don’t stare. Looking away when an elder is speaking is disrespectful.

The Gestures: when someone gives a "peace" sign or the "v" with their fingers, it’s an obscenity. Tapping the side of the forehead in England means they think someone is not smart.

People walk on the left and pass on the right.
